This department was established along with the inception of the Faculty of Shai‘ah (Islamic Studies) in 1971. It is mainly concerned with teaching the Qur’ān and its sciences, the Hadith and its sciences, ‘Aqidah (Islamic Creed), Religions and Da‘wah (Call for Islam).
The department offers a wide range of undergraduate and postgraduate courses. This includes B.A in Foundations of Religion, M.A in Qur’anic Exegesis, M.A in Hadith and M.A in Islamic Creed. It also includes Ph.D in Hadith and Ph.D in Tafsir. The department is planning to start new programs in the Qur'anic Readings, Islamic call, Islamic Media and Islamic Studies for non-Arabic speaking students.
 The department presently has 30 staff members; nine are full professors, 4 are associate professors and 17 are assistant professors. The department has a plan for increasing the number of its lecturer and keeping
